Elvis Almengot-Castillo, of Stamford, was arrested on Monday, Feb. 24, after officers with the Stamford Police Narc Squad received a tip the teen was selling drugs and was in possession of a gun, said Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.

After receiving a search warrant, members of the squad stopped Almegot-Castillo and conducted a search where they came up with $300 in cash, but no drugs or guns, Conklin said.

Officers then escorted Almengot-Castillo to his Severance Road home where they found a shopping bag with 128 grams of marijuana, and a digital scale. During the search, Conklin said Almengot-Castillo confessed to officers that he also had a gun hidden in the basement.

Officers retrieved the gun a .9 millimeter Taurus semiautomatic with an unusually large 32-bullet magazine that was loaded with nine bullets, Conklin said.

A check of the serial number on the gun, came back that the gun was stolen from a vehicle in October 2019 in Covington, Georgia, Conklin said.

Almengot-Castillo told officers he had bought the gun on the street.

Following his arrest, and during questioning, Conklin said Almengot-Castillo also admitted to being involved in a pistol-whipping incident on Jan. 2 in which a bullet was fired, by mistake and was found embedded in the wall of a building.

He has yet to be charged in the crime, as police await forensic results to see if the bullets match the weapon, Conklin said.

Almengot-Castillo was charged with possession of a high-capacity weapon, possession of marijuana, criminal use of a weapon, carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was originally held on a $200,000 bail, which was increased by a judge to $250,000 following a court appearance.

Conklin said Almengot-Castillo's pending charges were for an arrest in July 2019 for possession of a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol. He was free on bail.
